Se asoman desafiantes en las cornisas de las grandes catedrales góticas. Monstruos infernales, imágenes grotescas, muecas burlonas o animales dantescos. Cualquier representación es buena si consigue su objetivo: custodiar el recinto sagrado de los embates del Maligno. Son las defensoras pétreas, depositarias del encargo divino... son las gárgolas.
Refiere la tradición oral francesa la existencia de un dragón llamado La Gargouille, descrito como un ser con cuello largo y rectilíneo, hocico delgado con potentes mandíbulas, cejas fuertes y alas membranosas, que vivía en una cueva próxima al río Sena. La Gargouille se caracterizaba por sus malos modales, tragaba barcos, destruía todo aquello que se interponía en la trayectoria de su fiero aliento, y escupía demasiada agua, tanta que ocasionaba todo tipo de inundaciones. Los habitantes del cercano Rouen intentaban aplacar sus accesos de mal humor con una ofrenda humana anual consistente en un criminal que pagaba así sus culpas, si bien el dragón prefería doncellas.






Gargoyles, guardians against evil

the looming challenges on the cornices of the great Gothic cathedrals. Infernal monsters, grotesque images, or animal faces mocking Dante. Any representation is good if it achieves its goal: to guard the sacred precinct of the attacks of the evil one.
Gritty defenders are repositories of divine appointment ... are the gargoyles.

French oral tradition relates the existence of a dragon named La Gargouille, described as being long, reptilian neck, slender muzzle with powerful jaws, strong eyebrows and membranous wings, who lived in a cave near the river Seine.
The Gargouille was characterized by his bad manners, swallowing boats, destroying everything that stood in the path of his fiery breath, and spit too much water, so it caused all kinds of flooding.
The inhabitants of the nearby Rouen trying to placate his fits of temper with annual human offering consisting of a criminal who paid well for their sins, while the dragon preferred maidens.
