TESOROS Y TAPADOS DE LA AREQUIPA COLONIAL.

Probablemente de todas las leyendas sobre tapados y tesoros coloniales en nuestra ciudad, sea la del Tesoro de los Jesuitas, la más comentada por nuestros paisanos. Según cuenta la tradición y el folclore oral, se trataría de un cuantioso tesoro enterrado en 1767 -producto de la expulsión de esta Orden religiosa del Perú y América- en tres puntos del majestuoso volcán Chachani. Se dice que uno de estos lugares habría sido encontrado por un chileno, residente en el siglo XIX en nuestra ciudad, que habría gastado una parte del mismo -procurándose una buena vida, aunque no muy digna- pero extraviando, finalmente, la ubicación del lugar cuando quiso ubicarlo nuevamente. Este punto correspondería a una cueva subterránea por donde discurre un riachuelo. Los otros dos lugares aún no habrían sido descubiertos, aunque algunas versiones afirman que en la primera mitad del siglo XX, otros dicen que en la segunda, una expedición Norteamericana-argentina habría solicitado permiso al gobierno peruano para ir en busca de dicho tesoro y finalmente habría ubicado una segunda entrada y repartido el mismo -confidencialmente- con el gobierno de turno. En cualquier caso existiría un tercer lugar aún no ubicado del famoso tesoro que contaría una serie de objetos artísticos y joyas preciosas, hoy, de incalculable valor. Un punto que muchas veces se ha mencionado al respecto del tesoro jesuita es un surco, lugar que forma un cerro de nombre: Horqueta en el volcán ya mencionado. Algún parroquiano le afirmó a quien escribe, que en una de sus ascensiones al Chachani habría encontrado una piedra en forma de corona que algunos tomaron como un punto de referencia para dar con el tesoro -aunque en otras versiones escritas se trataría de una cruz de sillar-, pero al parecer nada se encontró.
Una versión más moderna afirma que dicho tesoro y según la dificultad que habría acarreado el llevar el tesoro jesuita hasta el Chachani -además de ser una empresa muy evidente a ojo de los codiciosos-, estaría enterrado en algún lugar ignorado bajo la iglesia de La Compañía o en sus claustros, lo cual no deja de tener alguna lógica. Lo cierto es que hace escaso tiempo, el piso de las dos naves laterales de la iglesia jesuita, fue excavado y entre otras cosas se halló una buena cantidad de tumbas centenarias y objetos religiosos dentro de estas. ¿Acaso parte del Tesoro Jesuita? ¿Quién sabe?
Otros tesoros, que por su menor valor se clasifican como tapados, habrían abundado en nuestra Arequipa en plena guerra del Pacífico. Se dice que por temor al saqueo por parte del ejército chileno, la mayor parte de familias escondían su dinero y joyas en sus propias casas, muchas de estas coloniales y aprovechando las gruesas paredes de sillar que son característicos en dichas construcciones. Mi padre, por ejemplo me contaba que cuando él era muchacho, había escuchado de un tapado descubierto, casualmente, en una pared que quedaba en plena calle, entre la actual Mercaderes y el Portal de Flores que da a la Plaza de Armas. Sucede que alguien habría estado trabajando dicho muro -probablemente por algún arreglo del predio a causa de algún movimiento sísmico- y de pronto las monedas -de plata- empezaron a caer hacia la calle con el asombro del trabajador. Nada más sabemos al respecto, pero a no dudar se trataba de una construcción anterior al actual edificio que fue construido alrededor del año 1930. (*)
Otra historia a nosotros referida nos habla de una antigua casona -en esquina- en la tercera calle del Puente Bolognesi. La casona se caracteriza por estar a un nivel más bajo que la de los vecinos, producto de la irregularidad de la calle en pendiente. Allí sus dueños habrían encontrado una gradería en forma de caracol que los habría conducido a una habitación subterránea que guardaba algún tapado. Incluso nuestra fuente refiere que para desenterrar dicho tapado y no levantar sospechas de vecinos o del verdadero dueño de la casa, la familia residente habría realizado una fiesta altisonante para cubrir los inevitables ruidos provocados por el pico y la comba. Finalmente una buena cantidad de monedas de plata y algunas de oro habrían sido encontradas.
La verdad es que mucha gente le cuenta a uno sobre diferentes lugares y casonas con tapados descubiertos. A veces las asocian con apariciones fantasmales o luminosas y esta parece ser la forma de prescindir del detector de metales y ahorrarse su alquiler o su costo. Lo cierto es que sin ánimos de especular, muchas casonas arequipeñas aún deben guardar dichos tapados, que la providencia puede nos la descubra y nos saque de pobres.
